WHAT IS VACUMMM CASTING ?
Vacuum Casting, also called silicon tool, is a manufacturing process to make the mold in silicon from a master model and cast the parts from polyurethane, transparent polyurethane, ABS and other materials under vacuum with the product prototype to achieve the strength and hardness of ABS and other materials. The parts can be casted according to the color required by customers.
Vacuum Casting is the best replacement of injection molding for low volume products. Casting material hardness and strength is very close to the injection molding material. Vacuum casting is a very low-cost and fast way to make rapid prototypes if you want 20 to 100pcs of parts.
How Does Vacuum Casting Work?
1 Master model making: the master model is made through CNC processing, SLA l or other 3D printing technology according to the 3D drawings provided by the customer.
2 Silicon tool Making: after the master model is made, a mold base is made to fix the master model, the silicon is poured into the mold base and getting dried for hours. The mold is open, and the master model is taken out. The silicon tool is completed and formed.
3 Casting, the polyurethane liquid will be injecting to into the silicone tool and vacuum starts. After hours curing, open the mold and the parts are formed. In some cases, a secondary curing for 2-3 hours in 70 ° - 80 ° under normal circumstances is necessary. Normally the tool life will be about 15 to 20 pcs, depend on parts sizes and structure complexity.
Now many parts can be produced by vacuum casting, such as plastic automobile prototype, medical device structure prototype, digital communication prototype. Material can be transparent acrylic, PC, silicone, clear rubber, silicon, POM, PP, PA , PE, HDPE similar PU tec.

Advantages of Vacuum Casting
1. Low production cost
Generally, the production cost is much lower than CNC processing and 3D printing if the quantity starts from 5 pieces.
2. No need to make a soft/hard tool
No need to make a soft/hard tool, which wins valuable time for customers to develop new products and seize the market.
3. Short production cycle
The production time is faster than CNC machining and printing as it is just a copy process and production time is short.
4. High reduction degree and low probability of processing failure

Disadvantages of Vacuum Casting
1. It is easy to shrink and deform, because it will shrink after high temperature heating and cooling, resulting in deformation. For those big parts with too thick wall thickness, the shrinkage will be big and hard to control. Also, with the uneven wall thickness parts, the shrinkage rate is hard to set.
2. The temperature resistance is not high. Generally, the vacuum casting prototypes only withstand a high temperature of about 60 degrees, and its strength and hardness are lower than those of CNC prototype. There is also some high temperature resistance casting PU but not many choices.
3. Not suitable for big batch production parts. The tool life of silicon tool is generally only 15 to 20 pcs and cannot be saved and maintained for long time. So vacuum casting is not suitable for big quantity plastic parts. Injection molding will be a better option in bigger quantity.
